Districts and public charter schools must provide parents with notice at least 30 days prior to administering the state-wide summative assessments in Math and English Language Arts (ELA) using the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) provided 30 day notice and opt-out form. Please read the attached document (English/Spanish) to learn more about state testing requirements and parental rights to opt-out of the Math and/or ELA summative assessments. Federal and state laws require that at least 95% of students in grades 3-8 and 11 take the Oregon Summative Assessments. Links to the ODE 30-Day Notice for Statewide Tests document including the optional opt-out form are available on the district and school websites for families of students that are interested. If choosing to opt your student out of state testing in Math and/or ELA please follow these directions:

1. Print a copy of the form (English/Spanish) OR pick up a copy in the main office at your student's school
2. Read and sign the form
3. Return the completed form to the main office of your student's school

Other State-Wide Assessments: Science and English Language Proficiency (ELPA) Assessments

For state assessments other than ELA and Math, Oregon Administrative Rule 581-021-0009 allows parents to request that their student be exempted from testing based on disability or religious belief. For a school or district official to excuse a student under this rule, the parent or guardian's request must be made in writing, listing the reasons for the request and proposing an alternative individualized learning activity for the student that meets the same goals that would be accomplished by participation in state testing. Parent requests for exemptions may be subject to review by school and/or district officials.
